10 Screen-Free Activities to Spark Your Kids’ Imagination

If you’re a parent, I’m sure you know the sound. It’s that familiar, hopeful question that seems to echo through the house at the most random times: “Can I watch a show?” or “Can I play a game on the tablet?” As a mom, I know that question can bring up a swirl of emotions—a little bit of guilt, a touch of exhaustion, and the deep-down desire to give our kids a childhood filled with more than just glowing rectangles.

And let’s be honest, screens are an easy solution. They’re a quick fix for a long afternoon, a moment of peace while you’re trying to cook dinner, or a lifeline on a rainy day. There’s no judgment here—I’ve been there more times than I can count. But I’ve also found that the moments when I push past the easy option and say, “Hey, let’s do this instead…” often turn into the most memorable, connection-filled times for our family.

It’s not about banning technology forever or striving for some kind of Pinterest-perfect, screen-free utopia. It’s about balance. It’s about intentionally carving out space for creativity, for boredom (which is where imagination is born!), and for simple, hands-on fun. It’s about remembering that a cardboard box and a little bit of imagination can be more powerful than the most advanced app.

So, I wanted to share some of my family’s favorite screen free activities for kids at home. These aren’t complicated or expensive. They are simple, grounded ideas meant to spark joy and encourage your kids to create their own fun. Think of this as your back-pocket list for the next time you hear that all-too-familiar question.

My 10 Favorite Screen-Free Activities for Kids

Here are ten of the go-to activities that have brought so much light and laughter into our home. I hope they do the same for yours!

    1. Build an Epic Living Room Fort

This is a classic for a reason. There is something undeniably magical about transforming a familiar space into a secret, cozy hideaway. Drape blankets and sheets over chairs, couches, and tables. Use clothespins or heavy books to secure the “roof.” Fill it with every pillow and soft blanket you can find. The act of building it is half the fun—it’s a lesson in teamwork, engineering, and problem-solving.

I’ll never forget one rainy Saturday when my kids were little and bouncing off the walls. On a whim, I suggested we build the biggest fort the living room had ever seen. It took over the entire room, and for the rest of the day, it was our world. It was a dragon’s cave, then a spaceship, then a quiet castle where we read books by flashlight. It’s a memory I cherish.

Take it to the next level: Have an indoor picnic inside your new fort! Pack up some simple snacks and drinks. This is where a little planning ahead really helps. Having some pre-made snacks on hand makes it feel spontaneous and fun. If you’re looking for inspiration, I have a whole list of healthy meal prep ideas that saved my sanity, and many of them are perfect for a fort picnic.

    2. Create Art with Nature’s Treasures

This activity starts with a little adventure. Head outside—to your backyard, a local park, or on a neighborhood walk—with a bag or bucket for collecting. The mission? To find nature’s art supplies. Look for interesting leaves, fallen petals, cool-shaped twigs, small pebbles, and pinecones. The hunt itself is a wonderful way to practice mindfulness and observation.

Once you’re back inside, lay out your treasures on a piece of paper or cardboard. You can glue them down to create a collage, arrange them into a temporary picture (a mandala or a face), or use them as paintbrushes with some kid-safe paint. It’s a beautiful, sensory way to connect with the natural world.

    3. Master the “Anything Box” Challenge

Never underestimate the power of a simple cardboard box. The next time you get a delivery, save the box and present it as a challenge. The goal: turn this box into anything you want. A race car? A robot costume? A dollhouse? A time machine? Provide some basic tools like non-toxic markers, tape, and kid-friendly scissors, and then step back and watch the ingenuity unfold. This is one of the best creative indoor kids activities because it’s 100% child-led and proves that the best toys don’t have to be fancy.

    4. Craft a Set of Story Stones

This is a wonderfully creative project that keeps on giving. All you need are some smooth, flat stones (you can find these on a walk or buy a bag at a craft store) and some paint or permanent markers. On each stone, draw a simple picture: a sun, a house, a key, a tree, a boat, a star, an animal. Keep them simple and iconic.

Once they’re dry, place them in a small bag. To play, have your child pull out a few stones at random and use the images to build a story. “Once upon a time, there was a little fox who found a magic key under a big tree…” It’s a fantastic tool for encouraging language development, imagination, and collaborative storytelling.

    5. Open a “Kitchen Potions” Lab

This one sounds messy, and it can be—but the joy it creates is worth it! Set your child up at the kitchen sink or on a baking sheet for easy cleanup. Give them some bowls, spoons, maybe a turkey baster or a funnel, and some safe “ingredients.” Think water, a little bit of food coloring, baking soda, and a small cup of vinegar. Let them mix, pour, and explore.

The fizzing reaction when they mix baking soda and vinegar is pure magic to a little kid. It’s a sensory wonderland and a very early, hands-on science lesson. It’s also a great reminder of how powerful simple, non-toxic ingredients can be! It’s the same principle I use when making my favorite DIY all-purpose cleaner—you don’t need harsh chemicals for an effective (and fun!) result.

    6. Put on a Shadow Puppet Show

This is an activity that feels like old-fashioned magic. All you need is a dark room, a flashlight or lamp, and a blank wall or a hanging sheet. Start by showing them how to make simple shapes with their hands—a bird, a rabbit, a dog. Then, let them experiment. They can also create puppets by cutting shapes out of cardboard and taping them to sticks. It’s a perfect pre-bedtime activity that winds things down while still engaging their creative minds.

    7. Write and Mail a Real Letter

In our world of instant communication, the act of writing, sending, and receiving a physical letter is a special kind of magic. Ask your child who they’d like to write to—a grandparent, a cousin, a friend who lives far away. Help them write a short note or draw a picture. Then, show them how to address the envelope, add a stamp, and put it in the mailbox. It teaches patience, connection, and the joy of doing something thoughtful for someone else.

    8. Host a Family Bake-Off

Cooking together is one of my favorite ways to connect as a family. It’s a sensory experience, a practical life skill, and it ends with a delicious reward! Choose a simple, kid-friendly recipe like chocolate chip cookies, simple muffins, or even homemade pizza. Let them help with measuring, stirring, and (their favorite part) tasting. Don’t worry about the mess; a little flour on the floor is a small price to pay for the memories you’ll make.

    9. Create a Family Time Capsule

This is such a sweet and meaningful project. Find an old shoebox or container and declare it your family’s time capsule. Have each family member contribute a few small items that represent this current moment in time. It could be a drawing, a favorite small toy, a photo, or a letter to their future self. As a wellness advocate, my work at Closer to Natural is a big part of my life, so I might include a note about what I’m passionate about right now. Once it’s full, seal it up, write the date on it, and agree to open it in one, five, or even ten years. It’s a beautiful way to honor your family’s story.

    10. Try Some Silly Stretches & Mindful Movement

Sometimes, kids just need to move their bodies. But it doesn’t always have to be wild, chaotic running around. Put on some calming music and guide them through some gentle, silly stretches. You can call it “animal yoga” and have them do Cat-Cow, Downward-Facing Dog, or stretch their necks like a giraffe. Or, you can play a game of “Freeze Dance” with calm music. It’s a wonderful way to help them get in touch with their bodies, burn off a little energy, and practice a bit of calm. It’s a simple practice that can benefit the whole family—adults included! It’s one of the simple mindfulness exercises to find calm that we can easily share with our children.

The goal of these activities isn’t to fill every single moment of your child’s day. It’s to plant seeds of creativity and show them that fun and wonder can be found anywhere—in a pile of pillows, a handful of leaves, or a simple cardboard box. It’s about choosing connection over distraction, even if just for a little while.

So next time you feel that pull towards the screen, take a deep breath and try one of these instead. You might be surprised by the magic you create together.

    With warmth,
    Laura

Soothing Teething Troubles Naturally: A Mom’s Gentle Guide

Soothing Teething Troubles Naturally: A Mom’s Gentle Guide

I still remember the first time I saw it—the unmistakable, Niagara-falls-level river of drool. My sweet, happy baby had suddenly transformed into a fussy, red-cheeked, everything-is-a-chew-toy little person. And my heart ached for him. There’s a unique feeling of helplessness that washes over you when your child is in discomfort and you can’t simply explain it away or kiss it better.

If you’re in the thick of the teething trenches right now, I see you. I know the sound of that specific, pained cry that cuts right through you. I also know the feeling of walking down the pharmacy aisle, looking at a wall of brightly colored boxes, and wondering, “Is there a gentler way?”

The answer is a resounding yes. As a mom and a researcher at heart, I’ve spent years exploring natural wellness, and my own children’s teething journeys were my first real-world classroom. This guide is a collection of the simple, safe, and truly effective natural remedies that brought comfort to my babies and peace of mind to me. This isn’t about hype or miracle cures; it’s about providing gentle comfort and reassuring you that you have the power to help your little one through this tricky milestone.

First, Know the Signs: Is It Really Teething?

Before we dive into remedies, it’s helpful to know what you’re looking for. Teething can look a little different for every baby, but there are a handful of classic signs that a new tooth is on its way. You might notice just one or two, or you might get the whole symphony at once!

    • Excessive Drooling: So much drool. It can sometimes cause a mild rash on their chin or chest, so keeping the area clean and dry is key.
    • Gnawing and Chewing: Everything goes into the mouth—their fists, your fingers, toys, the remote control. The counterpressure feels good on their sore gums.
    • Irritability and Fussiness: This is the tough one. Your normally cheerful baby might be cranky, clingy, and quick to cry. It’s hard for them to understand why they’re so uncomfortable.
    • Swollen, Tender Gums: If you can get a peek, you might see that their gums look puffy and red where a tooth is about to erupt. You might even see a little white nub just under the surface.
    • Disrupted Sleep: Ugh, the sleep regression. Discomfort that was manageable during a busy day can feel much more intense in the quiet of the night, leading to more frequent waking.

One quick note: While some parents report a very low-grade temperature or looser stools with teething, most pediatricians agree that a true fever, diarrhea, or vomiting are not normal teething symptoms. If your baby is experiencing those, it’s always best to check in with your trusted healthcare provider.

The Power of Cold: Your First Line of Defense

When it comes to instant teething pain relief, cold is your absolute best friend. It’s simple, effective, and completely free. The coolness provides a gentle numbing sensation that can be incredibly soothing for inflamed gums.

    The Classic Chilled Washcloth

This is the remedy I recommend to every new parent. It’s so simple, you might doubt its power—but don’t! With my oldest son, I remember a frantic 2 AM search for a solution. I had all the fancy gadgets, but what finally brought him (and me) relief was a simple, damp cloth from the fridge. It was a huge ‘aha’ moment for me and a lesson that has stuck with me on this Closer To Natural journey: sometimes the most profound solution is the simplest one.

How to do it: Simply take a clean, soft baby washcloth, wet it with filtered water, wring it out well, and pop it in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes. Then, let your baby gnaw on it. The nubby texture of the cloth combined with the soothing coolness is a perfect combination.

Chilled (Not Frozen) Toys and Foods

Applying the same principle, you can chill just about any baby-safe item. Keep a few silicone teethers in a clean container in the fridge so you always have one ready to go. For babies who have started solids, a mesh or silicone feeder is a fantastic tool. You can put a piece of chilled banana, a ripe peach slice, or even just an ice cube made of filtered water inside. They get the cold relief plus a little tasty treat.

A quick but important safety note: always use items that are chilled in the refrigerator, not the freezer. Anything frozen solid can be too harsh on a baby’s delicate gums and can even cause freezer burn.

    Gentle Herbal Allies for Teething

Herbs can be wonderful, gentle supporters during the teething phase. As always when it comes to our little ones, we want to be gentle and mindful. I’m not a doctor, and this is just me, Laura, sharing what has worked in my home. Please use these ideas as a jumping-off point for your own research and conversation with a provider you trust.

    The Magic of Chamomile

Chamomile is a true star in the world of gentle herbs. It’s renowned for its calming properties and its ability to soothe inflammation, making it perfect for teething. It helps calm both the sore gums and the fussy baby attached to them!

    1. Chamomile Ice Pops: Brew a very weak cup of organic chamomile tea (steep the bag for just 1-2 minutes). Let it cool completely, then pour it into baby-safe popsicle molds. These are a lifesaver for cranky afternoons.
    2. A Chamomile-Soaked Cloth: Instead of water, you can soak a clean washcloth in the cooled, weak chamomile tea before chilling it in the fridge. This delivers the herbal goodness right to the source.
    3. A Calming Compress: You can also use a tea-bag-turned-compress. After steeping, let the tea bag cool completely in the fridge, then let your baby mouth it (under your close supervision, of course).

    A Note on Immune Support

While teething itself doesn’t make babies sick, the stress on their little systems (and the constant hand-to-mouth action) can sometimes coincide with them picking up a bug. During these times, I like to focus on overall wellness. For older babies and toddlers, a little extra immune support can be helpful. It’s one reason why I’m such a believer in my simple, go-to elderberry syrup recipe for family wellness, which has become a staple in our home (always check with your pediatrician for age-appropriateness).

Choosing Safe & Non-Toxic Teething Toys

Since teething babies put everything in their mouths, this is a time to be extra vigilant about materials. Just as we’re mindful of the ingredients in my favorite DIY all-purpose cleaner that we use around our homes, we need to be even more careful about what goes directly into our babies’ mouths.

    What to Look For:

    • Materials: Look for 100% food-grade or medical-grade silicone, natural rubber (like from the Hevea tree), or solid, unfinished wood like maple. These materials are stable, durable, and don’t leach harmful chemicals.
    • Construction: The safest teethers are made from a single, solid piece of material. Avoid anything with small, glued-on parts that could become a choking hazard.

What to Avoid at All Costs:

    • Certain Plastics: Steer clear of plastics containing BPA, PVC, or phthalates. If a plastic toy doesn’t clearly state it’s free of these, I personally skip it.
    • Teething Necklaces/Jewelry: Please, please avoid these. Amber teething necklaces and other jewelry marketed for teething are significant strangulation and choking hazards. The FDA has issued official warnings against them. No potential benefit is worth that risk.
    • Topical Gels with Benzocaine or Belladonna: Over-the-counter teething gels that contain benzocaine are not recommended for children under 2 due to a rare but serious condition called methemoglobinemia. Likewise, homeopathic remedies containing belladonna have been linked to serious adverse events. It’s best to avoid them entirely.

More Than Remedies: The Power of Comfort and Connection

Sometimes, the most powerful “remedy” isn’t a thing at all. Teething is uncomfortable and confusing for a baby. Often, what they need most is simply you.

Extra cuddles, skin-to-skin contact, or wearing your baby in a soft carrier can work wonders. The gentle motion and your familiar scent are deeply reassuring. A warm (not hot) bath can relax tense little muscles and provide a welcome distraction. Singing softly, reading a book in a gentle voice, or simply rubbing their back can help shift their focus away from the discomfort in their mouth.

Don’t underestimate the healing power of your calm, loving presence. You are their safe space.

And finally, mama, don’t forget to care for yourself. Listening to a baby’s cries is biologically designed to be stressful for you. It’s draining. When you’re running on empty, having nourishing food ready can make all the difference in your ability to cope. I learned this the hard way, which is why I’m such a fan of having a few healthy meal prep ideas that saved my sanity on hand for these tough parenting stretches.

    This Too Shall Pass

In the middle of a sleepless night with a crying baby, it can feel like teething will last forever. But I promise you, it won’t. This is a season, a challenging but temporary milestone on their incredible journey of growth. One day you’ll look at their beautiful, toothy grin and the memory of these tough days will have faded.

Trust your intuition. Trust in the power of simple, natural comfort. And most of all, trust that your loving presence is the most powerful medicine of all.

    You’ve got this.

    Warmly,
    Laura
